Top defensive back Micah Fleming — the fastest DB in high school football

One of the top rising prospects in the 2027 recruiting cycle is Thompson (Alabaster, Alabama) defensive back Micah Fleming. Standing at 5-10, 175 pounds, Fleming has put in countless hours of work over the years to master the defensive back position. He's put in 20 hours of solo training per week, since he was 10 years old. That's outside of football practice. A major focus in drills has been that he's spent seven years getting out of his breaks, according to his dad.

It's not a position that many young players gravitate towards, but Terrance Fleming knew it'd be in his son's best interest to focus on one of the more challenging positions in the sport.

Fleming's tape speaks for itself. In the past three years, he's only allowed one touchdown, despite going up against some of the top prospects in the country year after year. His family moved from Colorado to Alabama in order to help bring him more exposure and attention in the recruiting process. That move has paid off and in a big way as schools are lining up across the country.

Big time schools like Oregon and LSU have been in contact, but have not offered yet. There is an extensive list of schools that have offered Fleming—Indiana, BYU, Maryland, Mississippi State, North Carolina, USC, Appalachian State, and others.

This week, the Fleming family will be visiting the Duke Blue Devils. One of the things they like about the Duke coaching staff is they “really specialize on development,” according to Terrance Fleming.

Next week, they'll visit the Indiana Hoosiers. And the IU coaching staff has made it no secret that Fleming is the top overall prospect on their board for 2027. “The whole staff is in love with Micah,” Terrance Fleming said. They've offered and Curt Cignetti and company are pounding the table hard for his services.

On Saturday, November 15th, Fleming will be in attendance for the Georgia–Texas game between the hedges in Athens, Georgia. The family has developed a very good connection with Donte Williams—defensive backs coach for UGA.

The Appalachian State Mountaineers have also made Micah Fleming a priority, constantly courting him and zooming with him all the time. “One of the coolest things ever,” his father said.

The fastest DB in high school — Micah Fleming ran a 6.91 60m as just a sophomore.

Clocked at an official 40-yard dash time of 4.38, Fleming has been getting plenty of attention from suitors across the country. And it's starting to heat up.

What are the major factors that will go into making a college decision? They want a place that feels like home with the coaching staff, coaches that are going to develop him, and they want Micah to be an important priority at the school.

As early as the seventh grade, Fleming landed his first scholarship offer. This one came from the USC Trojans. A big reason he got offered by the Trojans so early is because Fleming was training with Oliver Davis II—one of the most well-known and respected defensive backs coaches in the game. The Trojans are still recruiting Fleming four years later.

In 2023, Fleming played in the Under Armour All-American Game, their showcase for eighth graders. He earned MVP honors, snatched two interceptions, had one pick six, and had multiple pass breakups.

Terrance Fleming has played a very important role in his son's journey over the years, and he's gained knowledge from a number of coaches over the years. Patrick Surtain (FSU), Lane Kiffin (Ole Miss), and Bill Belichick (UNC) are just a few of the names that have passed along important knowledge.

He's also had his son work with a wide variety of trainers over the years, which has helped his son to get exposed to many different training techniques. “Every trainer teaches a different technique,” he said.

It'll be interesting to see whether or not Micah Fleming decides to reclassify in the future. He's still got time before that decision needs to be made. In the meantime, Micah Fleming will be focusing on his junior year for Thompson (Alabaster, Alabama).

He helped guide Thompson to the 7A State Championship his sophomore season last year. The family will also be using the summer of 2026 for college visits, since visiting schools during the high school football season is just not feasible.
